From Saturday

Here is the second pass on Greg.  I mainly worked on corrected mistakes from the first go.  I don't know how I was so off.

Next is this third pass on Hans Conreid.  I concentrated on the face and hair.  Next I'll work on the tie and clothing.

And last is the forth pass on this unknown black and white photograph.   I tried to work on the texture of the clothes.  I did this earlier but I don't think I posted it as the photo was mislabeled.

Grace Kelly

Here is a B&W photograph of Grace Kelly.  This is the first pass on a 12 x 18" panel.  I've painting this image before and wanted to gauge my progress.

And I'm Back Again

First up are the first two passes on this painting by George Spencer Watson, 1927.  I can't recall where I found it, maybe Googling Spencer, Indiana.  The second pass I narrowed the head about a quarter inch.

Next a color photograph of Greg.  It was raining that day and I had to come up with something to do.

And I'm Back

The weather was nice and I finally got a chance for some plein air painting.  Earlier, I had scouted out this old steamroller type contraption which is still used at this sod farm right off the bike trail.  I also included a photograph of my kit, which all fits on my bicycle.  I can pretty much get anywhere with this set up.

Sorry, I Forgot the Headline

I forgot the medium today, so nothing outside.  Here is the second pass on this 12 x 18" of Hans...

I have to figure out how to turn of this auto correct.  I'll probably have to review everything previous to see what unintended corrections were made.  Okay, hopefully that's fixed now.

Of Hans Conreid, a regular on the old Burns and Allen radio program.

These big ones are starting to not be so overwhelming.

Collapsed

After this second winter, I've been waiting for the nicer weather for plain air painting.  Now that it's here, I am too tired.  I also ride a bicycle for exercise and while I wasn't painting,  I also wasn't exercising.  So I am very unfit.  Thursday and Friday I had some long rides and it caught up with me today.  So for the next two or three weeks I won't be painting outside as much as I hoped.  I need to get in shape first.  But I'll get a few days week.  Anyway, here is the forth pass on this Sargent painting.

I know.  I was real tired and put too much color in her face.  But then, the background is clearly better.  So you got to give me that much.

Unknown Continued

I got to find the name of this woman.  Here is the third pass, having worked mostly on the top two thirds.

In the Ballpark

Here is the series on this painting by Alfred Agache in three passes.  Not bad.  I'm still thinking the blue of the head scarf should be a warm blue instead of a cold blue.  Well, the second winter seems to have ended and I will be doing more outdoor work than these color photographs or paintings.

Agache Continued

Here is the second pass on this painting by Alfred Agache.  Not that I expect anyone to recognize the name.  I only learned of it after seeing one painting of his and I thought I might be able to get reasonably close.  Or would like to get reasonably close to doing something like that.

I originally thought the head scarf was a cool blue/black, but now, after more time I see it as a warm blue/black.  I guess it was the pink/ox blood wall in the background the fooled me.  Anyways the black of the robe was different enough from the scarf it created a slightly lighter blue haze effect above the shoulders.  I was trying to get that down.  I'll keep going once or twice more on this one, but probably will try a second canvas later on.  Maybe even the full painting.

Monday's Session

First up is this third pass on a John Singer Sargent painting.  The original is in very matte and opaque colors.  I paint kind of glossy and transparent.  Oh well.

Next is the 12 x 18" B&W of Hans Conreid, a character actor from the Burns and Allen show.  It just looked like it was a interesting photo for me to have a go at.  This might be a little larger than actual size.  Now, it looks a little like Pablo Picasso to me.  I'll have to fix that on the next pass.

Jo Stafford Series

Here is the progression of the Jo Stafford study in three passes.

Agache Painting

Here is the start of a detail section of a painting by Alfred Agache (French, late 1800s)  Anyways, I liked this one painting and wanted to be able to do something like that.  The head scarf is a weird blue black, different from the robe.  I painted them different now so that it would be easier to differentiate between them on the next pass.

Elliot Lewis Series

Here is this study of Elliot Lewis, a character actor on the Burns and Allen show.  Mel Blanc was on the show too.

Friday

Here is the 5th pass on this painting by Gunn, of whom I have forgot their background.  I'll try one more pass on this one and update background on the painting and artist.

Thursday's Update

Hello All.  First up is this second pass on the singer Jo Stafford.  I couldn't do that a year ago.

Next is this 9 x 12" detail of a painting by John Singer Sargent.  I corrected a few mistakes from the first pass.  I think the head could be a bit narrower, but that can be easily addressed on the next pass.

And These Two

Now that I'm doing some color stuff, I thought I would try to do things that were hanging in local museums, so I could compare what I was doing with a pro.  First is this detail of painting by Bouguereau.  I saw the original last weekend and it's much different from my printout copy.  I'll take one more stab on this one.

And this one, the first pass on a John Singer Sargent painting, "Italian Girl with Fan" from 1882.  It's a close up of the head, as the painting is over 8 feet tall.  I'm not accustomed to that scale yet.

Catching Up

Sorry, it's been about a week since I last updated.  If there hasn't been a recent update, that doesn't necessarily mean that I haven't been painting.  It just means I haven't been updating.  I usually do it late at night, after cleaning up.  Sometimes I'm just tired after that and updating gets put off.

Here are some B&W studies I've been doing.  First is a 12 x 18" of an unknown actress.  I lost track of her name, but I'll probably find it later, after finishing with the series.

Next is a 9 x 12" of Jo Stafford, a singer from the 40s.  I was listening to the "Burns and Allen" radio show and they played a song "Manhattan Serenade".  The melody stayed in my head and later I searched YouTube for a better version and that's how I came across her.  The song has an interesting history, originally released in 1928, it was later released in 1942 but that time with lyrics.  Anyways, that was the first pass.

Cobina Wright Jr Series

Here is the sequence of Cobina Wright Jr.  Of whom I only know from hearing an old "Burns and Allen" radio show where she was the guest.  From that, I looked her up on Google and found some back and white photos with some good shadows and...
