I think I've strayed from my original goal of a colorized JSS charcoal drawing.  I've reviewed some earlier work and think I'll stay with a duo tone or a single color.

#117 Head Study

Tonight I present a copy of a John Singer Sargent painting done in 1881, Mrs James Lawrence, and which was destroyed in a fire in 1939.  I had a B&W photograph of the painting to work from.  Probably best not to use so much purple around the eyes as it looks like bruising.  I accidentally hit the painting with the brush in the upper right hand corner and I need to sort out how to finish the bottom edge.

Head Study #116

Tonight I present another JSS charcoal portrait of Angela McInnes in 1915.  She was later known as the writer Angela Thirkel.  And earlier known as the granddaughter of the Pre Raphaelite painter, Edward Burne Jones (1833-1898).

Update: This is my second attempt.  I think I've blown it on this one.  The gouache seems to lay down better when dry brushing.

Tonight I present another JSS charcoal drawing of Ruth Draper from 1913.  Googling her I see she was an actress that specialized/developed the character driven monologues and monodrama.  I'll back update this one too when I finish the last stage.

Update: This was the first try with gouache paint.  I think if I keep it simple it may work.  What I'm trying to accomplish is while printing a black and white JSS charcoal drawing, the printer malfunctioned and printed a colorized version.  I'm trying to duplicate that.

Here's another on of these JSS charcoal portraits of Muriel Thetis Wilson of Tranby Croft from 1907.  I'll back update this one too when I've finished the last stage.

Head Study #113

This is another John Singer Sargent charcoal portrait that I'm colorizing in watercolor.  The last study I had painted the blue in watercolor and I thought that was turning grey rather than blue.  So I figure that an opaque paint, like gouache, would not turn grey.  So I've made an order and should arrive someday this week.  I'll then back update when I've done the last stage.

Update: My dry brushing technique is coming along.  This one is smaller, there is not much room for changes.  I stopped before I wrecked it.

Head Study #112

This was an interesting mission tracking down who this person was.  The first photo I had was identified as Vanessa Parker.  I did a Google Reverse Image search and found her identified as the actress Olive May.  Digging further, I find her name was Olive Mary Meatyard and then later, the Countess of Drogheda.  So there was a promotion involved.

Head Study #111

This evening I present a portrait by a new "paint" called Schmincke Liquid Charcoal.  Schmincke is a German paint manufacturer.  I was experimenting to see if it could replicate real charcoal and... not so much.  But at least now I know.  And the subject matter was titled "1950s Female Fashion-27".

Tonight I present another one of those colorized John Singer Sargent charcoals of Lady Lilian Elizabeth Michaelis, 1914.  I think I was starting to adapt my style by dry brushing toward the end.
