Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" Study

Originally I was going to do this as a monochrome in green.  But due to the large size (15 x 22") the paper soaked up more paint than I anticipated and ran out of paint.  So the next session I went with blue just to see what would happen.  That blue didn't get very dark, so I followed up with purple.  Next thing I know is that since I'm half way to a color version I should continue with that.  So I guess that makes this an accidental color study of Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring".

Head Study #4

Here is a study of a John Singer Sargent mug of William Butler Yeats.  I thought I would take a break from monochromes and add other colors to see what it would look like.  I started out with a light wash of cobalt blue, then a wash of darker ultra marine blue and finished off with the darks in purple. I'm not so sure how much I like the color effects, but I did notice that I am starting to become more confident in my brush strokes.

Head Study #2

For a long time I've wanted to do a John Singer Sargent like charcoal portrait drawing, which he called a "mug".  But charcoal makes a chalk board like scratchy noise to the extent that I never made a complete charcoal drawing.  When I learned that watercolor is liftable (erasable) I saw a similarity of watercolor to charcoal.  So here is a copy of a Sargent mug.  I shall be attempting dozens more over the next few months.

Head Study #1

Well, I should start numbering these things as the title "Another Head Study" will soon become monotonous. That being said... here's another head study.  The first looked a little like Tony Curtis, so I spent the rest of the time to make it look not like Tony Curtis.  I can't remember whom it is either.

A Better Head Study

This one went better than the last ones.  Although I did have to move her mouth a tad to the right in the last of the sequence.

Another Watercolor Head Study

What am I saying?  I guess most of them are watercolor head studies.  Here is a screen cap from a 50s television show.

Another Head Study

This one was done in one session.  Not bad for a start.  I thought I would leave it at this stage.

A Rossetti Study

Here is the sequence of a monochrome study of a Rossetti painting.  The first one I ran out of mixed paint and the paper is only 15 x 11".  So i learned I needed bigger mixing wells if I were to attempt anything larger.

One More

I did this Sargent copy in one session.  It's 11 x 15" and I am some what pleased.  So now I will increase the size and start painting these on 15 x 22" paper more and more often.

More Watercolors

Some Watercolors

I've been transitioning into water colors the last six months and will be posting more and more of them.  Instead of a daily mix, I post a series to it's completion.  This next few will be clearing out the back log.
